Replaces Vital Electrolytes

When horses lose essential electrolytes through sweat, they may struggle to maintain hydration, regulate body temperature, sweat efficiently, and support normal muscle and digestive function. Apple Elite electrolytes are specially formulated with a balanced electrolyte profile of sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium and calcium to replenish vital electrolytes that get depleted through sweat to help maintain fluid balance and support proper digestion, muscle function and recovery. Available in powder, pellets and paste for daily and rapid delivery options for even the pickiest of eaters.

Helps Maintain Optimal Hydration and Fluid Balance

Proper hydration and fluid balance are essential for health and performance and play an important role in regulating body temperature, and supporting proper digestion, normal muscle function and recovery following exercise. Apple Elite electrolytes encourage healthy water consumption year-round to support optimal hydration and fluid balance.

Palatable Apple Flavor

When feeding a supplement, palatability plays an important role in consistent intake. Formulated with a palatable apple flavor, Apple Elite electrolytes are easily mixed in with your horse’s regular grain ration for daily use or administered in an oral paste for a rapid replenishment of electrolytes to help keep fluids in balance.

Choose the Form that Fits Your Horse's Needs

When it comes to supplements, not every horse has the same needs and preferences. Powders, pellets, and pastes each offer unique advantages depending on your horse's workload, feeding routine, travel schedule, and individual preferences. Choosing the right form can help make electrolyte supplementation easier for when your horse needs it most.

FAQs

All horses require electrolytes to support hydration, temperature regulation, digestion, muscle function and recovery. While standard diets usually cover maintenance needs, supplemental electrolytes are vital for horses that sweat for a prolonged time — whether from exercise, training, turnout, hauling, stress, or simply living in a hot climate. Sweat is comprised of sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium, and without adequate replenishment, horses may become fatigued, experience muscle weakness or recover more slowly. Remember to always provide unlimited access to fresh, clean water when feeding electrolytes.

While all horses need access to plain, free-choice salt to meet their daily salt requirements, horses that sweat during exercise, hot or humid weather, travel or periods of stress lose additional electrolytes than salt alone can replace and may need to be replenished. Performance horses often have the greatest electrolyte demands, but horses in moderate work or those exposed to challenging environmental conditions can also benefit from supplemental electrolytes.

Not necessarily — but cold weather doesn't eliminate the need for electrolytes. Horses lose electrolytes whenever they sweat, regardless of the season. While sweat losses are typically lower in cool weather, horses that are sweating regularly may still benefit from electrolyte supplementation during training and competition (especially if riding in a heated indoor arena) or stressful situations.

In addition, many horses are often less inclined to drink water during the colder months, making it important to encourage healthy water consumption. If your horse drinks less than usual during cold weather, supplemental electrolytes can help encourage water intake to support normal hydration and digestive function.

Electrolytes can be fed whenever your horse experiences increased sweat losses. Many horse owners use a dual approach and feed electrolytes daily during training, hot or humid weather and in new environments, and boost electrolytes during situations when rapid replenishment is needed, such as travel, long trail rides or competitions.

Unlike many other nutrients, electrolytes are not readily stored in the body and are excreted if not needed. While “stockpiling” electrolytes prior to increased sweating may not be effective, it is recommended to give electrolytes 8-12 hours before exercise or travel. Although this practice may be helpful, it is paramount that electrolytes lost in sweat are replaced shortly after the activity, since it may take a day or two to replace what has been lost. Remember to always provide unlimited access to fresh, clean water when feeding electrolytes.

Horse sweat contains approximately 2-4 times more electrolytes overall than human sweat, with particularly high concentrations of sodium and chloride. Because the electrolyte composition of equine sweat differs significantly from that of humans, sports drinks formulated for people are not appropriate options for horses.

When choosing an electrolyte product, look for formula designed specifically for horses that contain a complete, balanced blend of key electrolytes where sodium and chloride are the primary ingredients along with potassium, calcium and magnesium. Horse owners should also evaluate their horse’s individual needs, workload, and environment, as hydration needs can vary greatly from one horse to another.

Electrolytes are offered in multiple forms to cater to your situation, horse's preferences and feeding regimen. The right electrolyte form is the one that works best for both you and your horse.

Powder electrolytes are ideal for daily supplementation and are easily mixed with your regular grain ration. They are often the most economical option and can be adjusted based on workload, weather conditions and sweat loss. It's generally not recommended to add electrolytes to your horse's drinking water due to the extreme salty taste. This may discourage horses from drinking, which can increase the risk of dehydration. If you prefer to offer electrolytes in water, make sure plain water is available at the same time so your horse can choose.

Pelleted electrolytes provide the same essential minerals as a powder in a convenient, easy-to-feed form. They offer horse owners a convenient, palatable way to provide daily electrolytes to horses that are picky eaters or sort powders in their feed.

Paste electrolytes provide an immediate serving of essential minerals, and are an excellent means to use at competitions, on the trail, during travel or any in particularly demanding conditions when rapid replenishment is needed.

A horse doesn't have to be dripping with sweat to lose electrolytes. If your horse is sweating, he's losing electrolytes. Horses in regular work, hot or humid weather, competition, travel or other stressful situations often have increased electrolyte needs. If your horse is showing any of these signs, you may want to consider an electrolyte supplement:

• Heavy or prolonged sweating

• Slower recovery after exercise

• Muscle soreness or stiffness

• Difficulty cooling out after work

• Decreased energy or performance

• Reduced appetite or water intake

• Dry gums or delayed skin elasticity
